It's September again.. This is the time of busy hallways, classrooms filled with eager students, and the start of another school year. But while parents and educators focus on books, supplies, and lesson plans, one critical factor often goes unnoticed: the air students breathe inside their schools.Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) directly affects the health, performance, and long-term well-being of students and staff. Among the pollutants that compromise IAQ, radon gas stands out as one of the most dangerous, and often overlooked; threats in schools across the U.S. and beyond.

The Hidden Risk in Classrooms

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps into buildings through cracks in foundations, crawl spaces, and gaps around utility penetrations. Invisible, odorless, and tasteless, radon can accumulate indoors at unsafe levels without anyone realizing it.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. For children, the stakes are even higher: their faster breathing rates and developing lungs make them more vulnerable to radon exposure over time. In fact, the EPA estimates that 1 in 5 schools in the United States has at least one classroom with elevated radon levels. That means thousands of children and teachers are at risk every day simply by showing up to school.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters for Learning

Beyond the life-threatening risks of radon poisoning, poor indoor air quality in general has immediate and visible impacts on student success. Studies show that when classrooms have high levels of pollutants like radon, mold, or COâ‚‚, students experience:
• Increased headaches, coughing, and asthma symptoms
• Higher rates of absenteeism
• Decreased attention span and concentration
• Lower test scores and academic performance

On the flip side, when schools invest in clean indoor air, the benefits are clear: healthier students, improved attendance, and better learning outcomes. Simply put, good air equals better education.

The Role of Radon Testing and Mitigation

The good news is that radon problems in schools can be solved. The process starts with residential radon testing and commercial testing for schools, which determines whether radon levels exceed the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L. If elevated levels are found, a radon mitigation contractor can install a system that safely reduces radon concentrations.

How does radon mitigation work?

A radon mitigation system typically uses a fan and PVC pipe system to draw radon gas from beneath the school’s foundation and vent it safely outdoors. This method, known as sub-slab depressurization, is highly effective at reducing radon levels.

The cost of a radon mitigation system for schools depends on the size of the building and complexity of installation, but the long-term health benefits far outweigh the expense. Investing in radon reduction ensures that students and teachers breathe safer air year after year.

Radon Gas Symptoms vs. Silent Threat

Unlike other pollutants, radon does not cause immediate, noticeable symptoms of radon exposure such as coughing or dizziness. Instead, long-term exposure leads to radon-induced lung cancer, often with no warning signs until it’s too late. This makes regular radon testing not just important… it’s essential!

Parents wouldn’t ignore a broken heater in the winter or unsafe drinking water in the cafeteria. Radon should be treated with the same urgency, because the health consequences of doing nothing are severe.

Why Schools Need to Act Now

September’s back-to-school season is the perfect reminder that schools must prioritize health alongside education. Creating a safe learning environment means ensuring every classroom has clean, breathable air.

By partnering with a radon mitigation contractor or joining networks like National Radon Defense, schools and facility managers gain access to proven testing, abatement, and remediation strategies. These partnerships provide not just radon removal, but ongoing support to maintain safe indoor environments.

And the benefits extend beyond the classroom. Parents gain peace of mind, school districts demonstrate responsibility, and communities see healthier, stronger outcomes for their children.

The Bigger Picture: Clear Air is a Global Mission

Radon doesn’t stop at city limits or state lines. From small towns in the Midwest to large urban districts in the Northeast, radon is a global issue that requires proactive solutions. By spreading awareness, schools can lead the way in protecting future generations from this invisible danger.

In fact, addressing radon in schools also raises awareness for homeowners, reminding families to ask critical questions:

• What is the radon level in my child’s school?
• Have I tested my own home for radon?
• If levels are high, do I know how much a radon mitigation system costs and where to find a radon mitigation contractor?

Why Omaha and Nebraska Schools Need to Focus on Indoor Air Quality and Radon Mitigation

September in Nebraska means more than football games, changing leaves, and crisp mornings. It’s also back-to-school season. Hallways across Omaha and the Midwest are filling with excited students, dedicated teachers, and the energy of a fresh school year. But while parents focus on supplies and educators focus on lesson plans, one critical factor often slips under the radar—the quality of the air inside our schools.

The Hidden Risk Beneath Nebraska Classrooms

In the Midwest, especially here in Nebraska, we face higher-than-average radon levels because of our soil makeup. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps into buildings through cracks in foundations and utility gaps. It’s invisible, odorless, and tasteless; yet dangerous when it builds up indoors.

The EPA identifies radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., second only to smoking. And children are particularly vulnerable. With faster breathing rates and developing lungs, the risks to students exposed to radon over time are significant.

In fact, the EPA estimates that 1 in 5 schools across the U.S. has at least one classroom with unsafe radon levels. That means Nebraska kids could be sitting in classrooms every day where the air isn’t safe to breathe.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters in Schools

We know that poor indoor air quality whether from radon, mold, or COâ‚‚ (Carbon Dioxide) directly impacts student performance and health. In schools with poor air quality, studies show:

More headaches, asthma flare-ups, and coughing

Higher student absenteeism

Shorter attention spans and less focus

Lower test scores and academic performance

But when schools invest in healthier indoor air, the benefits are immediate and lasting: better attendance, stronger academic performance, and healthier kids. Simply put, clean air supports better education.

How Nebraska Schools Can Take Action

The good news is, radon in schools can be managed with proper testing and mitigation. It starts with a professional radon test. If results show radon levels above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L, schools should move quickly to install a mitigation system.

A typical radon mitigation system uses fans and piping to pull radon gas from beneath the foundation and vent it safely outside. This proven method—called sub-slab depressurization—is the most effective way to keep radon from accumulating indoors.

Yes, installing a system requires investment, but the long-term health benefits for students and staff make it one of the most important decisions a school district can make.

Why Urgency Matters

Radon doesn’t come with symptoms you notice right away. You won’t hear coughing, see watery eyes, or feel shortness of breath in the moment. Instead, radon exposure builds silently over time, increasing lung cancer risk with every breath. That’s why schools need to test, and if needed, mitigate; before the damage is done.

Parents wouldn’t ignore unsafe drinking water in the cafeteria or a broken furnace in the winter. Radon deserves the same level of urgency.

The Bigger Picture for Omaha and the Midwest

Addressing radon in schools is more than a building maintenance issue—it’s a community health priority. When Nebraska schools take action, they send a clear message: our kids’ health matters. And it doesn’t stop at the classroom door. When parents hear about radon in schools, many realize they’ve never tested their own homes. This creates a ripple effect of healthier schools, healthier homes, and ultimately healthier communities across Omaha and the entire Midwest.

This back-to-school season, let’s make clean air as essential as backpacks and pencils. By prioritizing radon testing and mitigation in Omaha and Nebraska schools, we can protect students, support teachers, and give families the peace of mind they deserve. Because when our kids breathe cleaner air, they don’t just feel better—they learn better, perform stronger, and grow up healthier.

Clear Air. Safer Schools. Brighter Futures for Nebraska.

This creates a ripple effect of healthier homes, healthier schools, and healthier communities.

As the new school year begins, let’s remember that learning starts with the basics and nothing is more basic than the air we breathe. By investing in radon testing, radon abatement, and clean indoor air systems, schools can protect the next generation from a silent yet preventable health threat. Because when kids breathe clean air, they don’t just feel better, they think clearer, learn faster, and build brighter futures.
Nebraska's strong communities and family values are something we cherish. However, an invisible danger, radon, can silently compromise the health of our households. As your local experts at Nebraska, get to know why we're educating you about this risk.

The Elevated Radon Threat in Nebraska

It's a well-documented fact that Nebraska faces a significant radon issue, with some of the highest average radon levels in the United States. The EPA has designated much of our state, including Omaha, as Zone 1 for radon, signifying a high probability of indoor levels exceeding the action threshold of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). This isn't a distant concern; it's a local reality that demands attention from homeowners in Lincoln, Bellevue, Grand Island, and all Nebraska communities.

Understanding Radon and Its Entry into Your Home

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas resulting from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. This gas can seep into homes through foundation cracks, gaps around pipes and wires, and even through well water. Its odorless, colorless, and tasteless nature makes radon testing the only reliable way to detect its presence.

The Serious Health Risks: Radon and Lung Cancer

The Surgeon General and the EPA have unequivocally stated that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for thousands of deaths annually. The synergistic effect of smoking and radon exposure significantly elevates this risk. For Nebraska families, understanding this connection is paramount. Protecting your loved ones starts with awareness and action.

Debunking "Radon Poisoning" and Understanding Long-Term Exposure

While the term "radon poisoning" isn't technically accurate in the way we think of immediate poisoning, long-term exposure to elevated radon levels causes irreversible damage to lung tissue at a cellular level, leading to an increased risk of lung cancer. There are no immediate, noticeable "symptoms of radon exposure." This is why it's often called the "silent killer." The health consequences manifest years after prolonged inhalation of the radioactive gas. This lack of immediate symptoms underscores the critical importance of proactive radon testing.

Radon Testing: The Essential First Step for Nebraska Homeowners

The only way to determine if your Nebraska home has elevated radon levels is through radon testing. Radon testing in Omaha and throughout the state is a simple process. You can choose between short-term tests (lasting a few days) for a quick initial assessment or long-term tests (conducted over several months) for a more representative annual average.

Radon Defense Midwest provides professional and accurate radon testing services in Nebraska. Our certified technicians utilize state-of-the-art equipment and follow EPA protocols to ensure reliable results. We'll clearly explain your test findings and recommend appropriate next steps if mitigation is necessary.

Radon Mitigation: Implementing a Radon Reduction System

If your radon testing result reveals levels at or above the EPA's action level, or if you prefer to mitigate even lower levels as a precautionary measure, a radon reduction system is the solution. Radon mitigation in Nebraska involves installing a system designed to safely vent radon gas from beneath your home to the outside.

A typical radon reduction system (also known as a radon mitigation system) includes:

A Suction Point: A hole is created in the basement floor or slab to access the soil beneath.

A Vent Pipe: PVC piping is installed to draw radon gas from the suction point.

An Electric Fan: This fan actively pulls the radon gas up through the vent pipe.

A Discharge Point: The radon gas is safely released outside, above the roofline, where it disperses harmlessly.

Sealing: Cracks and other openings in the foundation are often sealed to minimize radon entry into the home.

Note: There is not safe radon level! As much as we can bring it to zero (0), the better!

Radon Mitigation Cost or Pricing in Nebraska: Understanding the Investment

The radon mitigation pricing in Nebraska can vary depending on several factors, including the design and size of your home, the type of foundation, the accessibility of the work areas, and the complexity of the installation. Generally, homeowners in the Greater Omaha area and across Nebraska can expect to invest somewhere in the range of $1,200 to $3,000 for a standard radon reduction system.

While this is an investment, it's crucial to consider it as an investment in your family's long-term health and the safety of your home. Radon mitigation significantly reduces the risk of lung cancer associated with radon exposure, providing invaluable peace of mind. Radon Defense Midwest provides free, no-obligation estimates for radon mitigation in Nebraska, offering transparent pricing and explaining all aspects of the installation process.

How Radon Defense Midwest Embodies National Radon Action Month

Every January, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and health advocates across the nation recognize National Radon Action Month, a vital campaign aimed at raising awareness about radon gas—a silent, invisible threat and the second leading cause of lung cancer. Over 21,000 lives are lost annually to this naturally occurring gas, which seeps into any home or area undetected without proper testing. Here in Greater Omaha, Nebraska, Radon Defense Midwest (RDM) is proud to support this mission. Guided by National Radon Defense’s tagline, “Clearing Air, Saving Lives,” RDM is committed to making local homes safer and healthier by combating this hidden danger.

Understanding the Radon Risk in Nebraska

Radon gas forms from the natural decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. While it disperses harmlessly outdoors, radon can accumulate to hazardous levels when trapped indoors. Nebraska is a Zone 1 state, meaning homes are at higher risk of elevated radon levels, making regular testing crucial. This is based from the EPA Zone Radon Map.

Radon is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it undetectable without proper testing. With 1 in 15 U.S. homes showing elevated levels, the risks in Omaha and surrounding areas cannot be ignored. Fortunately, Radon Defense Midwest provides reliable solutions, bridging the gap between awareness and action.

“Clearing Air, Saving Lives” in Greater Omaha

At RDM, “Clearing Air” represents our commitment to educating homeowners about radon risks, while “Saving Lives” reflects our ultimate goal: to protect the health of our community.

Our services align seamlessly with the goals of National Radon Action Month, encouraging homeowners to act by testing their homes and, if necessary, installing radon mitigation systems. Testing is the first step, and our professional team is here to guide you every step of the way.

The Benefits of Prevention

A simple radon test followed by mitigation can reduce radon levels by up to 99%, providing peace of mind and protection for your family. At RDM, we strive to educate homeowners in Greater Omaha about the importance of swift action and reliable mitigation systems. For many families, safety begins with a single decision: to test their homes. By offering professional testing and customized mitigation solutions, RDM empowers you to take control of your indoor air quality.

Amplifying Radon Risk Awareness Locally

During National Radon Action Month, RDM amplifies its efforts in Greater Omaha by partnering with local organizations to spread awareness about radon. Whether through community events, local media, or our ongoing education campaigns, our goal is to motivate homeowners to prioritize testing before it’s too late. Radon testing is the first step to know your levels and mitigation comes second once ideally to your home struction along with your results.

Making a Difference, One Nebraska Family at a Time

The Smith family, local to the Omaha area, discovered elevated radon levels during a routine home inspection. With RDM’s help, they installed a mitigation system, reducing radon levels to safe limits. Inspired by their experience, they now advocate for radon testing among their neighbors. Their story is just one example of how Radon Defense Midwest makes a real difference in our community, transforming homes into safe spaces at a time.

A Lifetime Commitment to Greater Omaha & Nebraska

Radon may be present in your home at a harmful level. About 21,000 Americans every year lose their lives to lung cancer, with radon being the main culprit among non-smokers in the country. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and U.S. Surgeon General urge everyone to create mitigation plans to protect their health by continuously monitoring indoor air quality.

These particles generate tiny energy bursts as they degrade. Throughout your lifetime, this can lead to lung cancer, especially in smokers and ex-smokers.

Radon, being a carcinogen, is a major health concern that is easily addressed. Government health agencies advise that all homes, schools, and other facilities be tested for radon to safeguard occupant health. Exposure to radon is preventable.

On May 20th, 2022 We sent out our licensed and trained technician Andrew and assistant John to the home. Andrew went over the home and design with the customer. He got right to work with installing a 5 point radon mitigation system and mounting the fan on the exterior of the home with a fan housing cover. They also added in a muffler to reduce the noise of the radon fan. The customers immediatley provided positive feedback and were thrilled with out the installation turned out. "The crew was very polite and kept me informed throughout the process. We would recommend your company. Thank you for being such great people to work with, it was nice to be comfortable with a crew in our home!" We recently received their post test results back and we are glad to see they are averging levels at 1.4 PCI Level! It was truly a pleasure working with such awesome customers and knowing their home is now healthier because of the hard work and dedication we put into even the hardest designs.

A concern couple contacted Radon Defense Midwest after conducting a home test for radon using an activated charcoal kit. They found they had a high reading of 7.2 PCI. Once Radon Defense Midwest was contacted, we knew we needed to help with the action of mitigating their home in order to provide a healthy living space. Upon the inspection of our licensed technician, we discovered that the home had multiple entry points for radon. With it being a difficult design, we sat down with our concerned homeowners and gave them the options as far as placement and the work to be done to help reduce the radon levels.

Omaha, NE – Thousands of people in Nebraska and Iowa could be saved from radon-related lung cancer by testing for and then, if needed, installing a radon mitigation system. Radon is a cancer-causing gas that can seep into homes, businesses, and schools and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Tom Kelly, Former Director of EPA’s Indoor Environments Division. “We know that radon is a carcinogen. Research confirms that breathing low levels of radon can lead to lung cancer.” (www.epa.gov/radon)

To raise awareness of radon, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated January as Radon Action Month in 1999. Why January? The best time to test is when you have “closed-house conditions”. Closed house conditions are when the windows are closed and less likely to be used, and less traffic in and out of your home. In addition to raising radon awareness, this month of action is meant to encourage people to get their homes, workspaces, and schools tested for radon.

Radon Defense Midwest is the local leader in radon. Radon Defense Midwest’s radon experts can help determine if a building’s radon levels are above the EPAs recommended 4.0 pCi/L, and if so, can install an aesthetically pleasing and affordable radon mitigation system.

Radon Action Month is a collaborative effort between the EPA and other national organizations dedicated to lowering radon exposure, like the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST), of which Radon Defense Midwest is a member.

Owner, Curt Drew states that testing and mitigating will help save lives here and all over the United States. “Through our continued work to increase awareness about radon’s dangers, testing homes and mitigating homes, I look forward to the day when we can eliminate lung cancer deaths caused by radon exposure.”

National Radon Defense Midwest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 27, 2020

Omaha, NE - Central Iowan homeowners are exposed to some of the most toxic levels of radon in our country. Thankfully, National Radon Defense Midwest has newly expanded their radon mitigation services to help Iowans protect their homes and loved ones from this deadly gas. The professionals of National Radon Defense Midwest have expert-level training and are ready to eliminate the dangerous radon problem- a problem which kills more than 20,000 people in the U.S.A. every year.

This study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains how people living in central Iowa are at a higher risk of exposure. Radon is an invisible, odorless gas created by the natural radioactive breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. The danger occurs when high levels of radon become concentrated in a structure. Over time while radon is inhaled, radioactive particles become trapped in our lungs and decay, damaging our lung cells. Because of this, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

Curt Drew and Anthony Maeser are keen to the dangers of radon and created National Radon Defense Midwest to help protect Midwest homes. They decided to expand National Radon Defense Midwest’s service territory to make sure Central Iowans are protected as well. “Keeping families safe in their own homes isn’t just a business for us, it’s our passion,” they explained. “We are grateful to be able to give more homeowners peace of mind and clean air to breathe.”

National Radon Defense Midwest offers a full range of radon services, from testing to see if a home has a high concentration of radon, to mitigating the radon with an aesthetically pleasing mitigation package. They are the flagship dealer for National Radon Defense and receive high-level training and support from the nation’s leading network of radon service providers.

Katie called National Radon Defense Midwest. She had heard that a radon system might pull some of that sewer gas from under her house. She thought it was worth looking into.

Tony Kulhanek, Indoor Air Quality Expert from NRD Midwest, came out to the house to listen and learn about the problem. Together, Tony and Katie decided to prescribe a Radon Mitigation System, an Energy Recovery Ventilator, and a Breathe EZ Air Cleaner.

"The results are amazing", Katie shared after the system was installed.

NRD Midwest Team Leader Lance Lichtas and co-Foreman Cole Kellogg installed the system. The Radon Mitigation System is a depressurization system. It's designed to pull soil gasses out of the house before entering. It worked great here.

The Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) actively pulls fresh air into the unit, conditions that air, and then injects the fresh air into the house. At the same time, the ERV is pulling the poor indoor air out of the house and exhausting it outside.

The Breathe EZ Air Cleaner is installed into the current HVAC filter space in the furnace. The air cleaner actively filters particles, viruses, bacteria, odors, and radon decay products using a 24 volt current within the unit.

Combining these 3 solutions resulted in a huge improvement to Katie's indoor air quality.

Please watch the video of Katie explaining how the system worked for her in the video testimonial section of our website.

NRD Midwest is so excited that we could help Katie enjoy her newly remodeled house with fresh, clean air!

Katie was at a loss what to do next. A sewer pipe was broken under her house. It was leaking a strong sewer smell into her house. Katie tried everything. She had multiple plumbers out, but their recommendations would cost over $25,000. Katie poured bleach down the floor drains on a daily basis. All that did was mask the smell. Katie just did a really nice remodel too, but her house smelled terrible.

The National Radon Defense network has been installing Soil Vapor Intrusion Mitigation systems for years across North America. National Radon Defense Midwest is the local expert in this service in Nebraska and Iowa. NRD Midwest designed a depressurization system to pull these harmful PCE toxins out of the soil and vent safely outside the hotel.

The owner's of the hotel were very concerned about the issue and wanted it fixed right. They made a significant investment to ensure the health and safety of their staff and guests.

The pictures you see in this case study show two Soil Vapor Intrusion Mitigation systems installed on the south end of the building. NRD Midwest's Production Team Leader Andrew Albright and Co-Foreman Randy Baumfalk used high force extraction fans to pull the toxins to extraction points inside the facility. The systems create a path of least resistance for the gasses to easily travel outside. The fans run continuously resulting in constant treatment of the facility. The guests and staff of the A Lofts Hotel by Marrioott are completely safe from PCE fumes due to this system.

The real estate developer for the new A Lofts by Marriott in Omaha, Nebraska was faced with a challenge. The land that the hotel was being built on was previously occupied by a Dry Cleaning Facility. Old Dry Cleaner's used to dump their cleaning solvents right into the soil prior to EPA regulations that determined this practice to be very dangerous. The solvents used to dry clean clothes are very toxic.

Dry cleaners use dangerous chemical solvents that can stick to clothing. Most cleaners use perchloroethylene, also known as tetrachloroethylene, PCE, or perc. It is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen, according to the U.S. National Toxicology Program, a prestigious inter-agency scientific body.

The issue with PCE is that it does not desolve into the soil. It stays in the soil as a plume and off-gasses up into buildings. That's what was discovered during the environmental study at the A Lofts.

National Radon Defense Midwest purchases Thrasher, Inc's radon division.

Omaha, NE – National Radon Defense, the largest network of independent radon companies, announced today that they have recently acquired Thrasher, Inc’s Radon division. The new entity will be called, National Radon Defense Midwest.

Thrasher has been a dealer of National Radon Defense (NRD) since 2009. They built a successful radon division but decided to focus on their core services of basement waterproofing, foundation repair, and concrete leveling. During that same time, National Radon Defense built a dealer network that serves 34 states and 2 Canadian provinces. The strategic purchase of Thrasher’s local radon operation will assist NRD’s goal of continued growth and innovation and to be the preferred choice for radon services across North America.

Many of the talented people from Thrasher have agreed to join NRD Midwest. “Thrasher’s installation crews and other key employees are passionate about radon reduction services and are a part of our team. Because of our long partnership with Thrasher, the transition will be seamless for Thrasher’s customers,” said Curt Drew, owner of National Radon Defense and National Radon Defense Midwest.

“We’re excited to have our own local operation,” said Curt. “This strategic purchase is a great opportunity to grow a successful local business, help protect our community against radon exposure, and provide an exceptional training experience for our dealers.”

It will be a good outcome for Thrasher customers, too. “Thrasher has worked with NRD for a long time. They’re leaders in the field. We’re confident they will take really good care of our customers,” said Thrasher president, Dan Thrasher. “Radon mitigation is extremely important, especially in our part of the country.”

Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year. A study by the EPA shows that people living in Nebraska and Iowa are at high risk when it comes to radon exposure.
